Allstate and Home Builders Association join together for Fire Safety Week October 5

As part of the annual Fall Parade of Homes, Allstate Insurance Company, and the HBAGGR will join forces on Saturday, October 5 to distribute smoke detectors and fire safety information.  This coincides with the  annual Fire Safety week which takes place October 6-12.

“National statistics show that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home. With the Fire Prevention Week theme of ‘Prevent Kitchen Fires’ it’s the perfect time to showcase simple fire prevention tips and distribute smoke detectors,” says Joe Lange, a Grand Rapids Allstate agency owner.

Lange, will be at Fall Parade Home #25 at 1740 Stiles Creek road in Grand Rapids to distribute fire safety DVDs and home safety tips from 1-3pm. The HBA will provide a limited number of smoke detectors to be distributed to those that stop by the Parade Home built by Berghuis Construction.

The 2012 Fire Loss Report published in the September/October issue of National Fire Prevention Association Journalstates that U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,375,000 fires.  These fires caused 2,855 civilian fire deaths, 16,500 reported civilian injuries and $12.4 billion in direct property damage. Eighty-three percent of the deaths resulted from fires in homes, including one- or two family homes.  A smoke detector is the best tool to help prevent tragic endings.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 fire that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

The annual Fall Parade of Homes presented by the Home Builders Association (HBA) and sponsored by Option 1 Credit Union will begin October 4 through October 19. The HBA of Greater Grand Rapids and their members will showcase 32 new homes, and 4 virtual homes throughout West Michigan.

“The Parade of Homes has always been about great design, craftsmanship and showcasing the work of area builders,” says Emily Siebert.  “Our partnership with Allstate Insurance Company allows us to put a focus on in-home safety as well.  Look for a variety of safety tips throughout all the parade homes.”

Allstate is committed to keeping Grand Rapids a ‘Safe & Secure Community’ by bringing a series of educational programs to the city to help area families learn about safety. Grand Rapids is only one of 16 communities in the country selected for this new initiative.
